The Partial Test Ban Treaty (PTBT) is a treaty that requires all nuclear testing to take place underwater. The U.S., U.S.S.R. and U.K. signed the treaty in Moscow on August 5, 1963. It went into effect on October 10, 1963.
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a treaty to ban the use of nuclear weapons in any way, for any purpose. It was adopted by the United Nations' General Assembly on September 10, 1996, but not entered into force. Forty-four countries have signed this treaty including the five nuclear states. India, Pakistan and North Korea did not sign. This treaty cannot be put into practice yet.
