Effectiveness of NPT
The Nonproliferation Treaty has successfully controlled the further spread of technology needed to create nuclear warheads. The large amount of countries that signed to join has helped in keeping only four other countries not in the treaty to acquire warhead capabilities. The treaty has also helped other countries obtain technology to harness nuclear energy to generate electricity in a more environmentally friendly way. By agreeing to not pursue the weaponization of nuclear energy, the members of the NPT are given help in developing nuclear reactors that can generate large amounts of emission free electricity. The NPT itself has brought attention to the importance of disarming for a safer world.
The shortcomings of the NPT are that even after reducing the proliferation of nuclear warheads, there still remains large stockpiles of these weapons both in the five nuclear states and four nations that are not part of the NPT. With this said, the next step is to completely reduce stockpiles to zeros, keep pushing negotiations and sanctions on states who refuse to disarm. One side of these negotiations has to demonstrate how serious they are in bringing about the full disarmament of nuclear weapons.
